Legal trouble for Baahubali

Jan 9, 2014 SV

It is reported that Karnataka based Jain Mutt has sent a legal notice to the Baahubali team against the film’s title. Reports say that Bhattakalankar Soudha Swamiji Mutt of Uttara Kannada has issued the legal notice alleging that the film’s title is hurting their religious sentiments. It has to be noted that Bahubali is worshipped as Gomateshwara by the Jain community.

Advocate Nagashree who sent the legal notice has said that Lord Gomateshwara is worshipped as a symbol of peace and sacrifice. He alleged that the trailers of Baahubali show a very violent and aggressive character with swords and fights and it is affecting the religious sentiments.

He added that if the story of the film is based on Lord Gomateshwara the community wants to stop the filmmakers from making it.

In the 10th century Kannada text, Adikavi Pampa, Bahubali was the second son of the hundred sons of the first Tirthankara, Rishaba. According to the legend, Bahubali and Bharat were two sons of Bhagwaan Rishabh Dev. When Rishabh Dev split the kingdom between Bharat and Bahubali equally, the two brothers started a war. Finally, Bahubali renounced the kingdom and followed an ascetic path.

Refuting the claim, Shobu Yarlagadda, producer of the film, has said that the film is not inspired by any religious texts but a fictional story.

Baahubali directed by ace director SS Rajamouli has Prabhas, Rana, Anushka and Tamannaah in the main roles.
