More Numbers but More Failures too

More in numbers but more in failures too, that seems to be the half yearly balance sheet of Malayalam film industry in 2014. Almost 80 films have been released till June 2014 and this is more than the previous year’s releases.

But the number of flops during the same period compared to the previous year also has gone up. The increase in number of releases is mainly attributed to the lucrative satellite rights.

Out of the 80 films only 7 have made it into the hit chart. ‘1983’, ‘Om Santhi Osana’, ‘7th Day’, ‘Ring Master’, ‘How Old are You?’, ‘Bangalore Days’, and ‘Angry Babies’ are the hit movies. Of these ‘Bangalore Days’ is turning out to be a mega hit with box office collection grossing more than 10 crores in the initial week itself.

All the remaining fell flat in box office. One of the most anticipated films of the year Aashiq Abu-Mammootty team’s ‘Gangster’ had a disastrous run in the theaters. Mohanlal too could not repeat the success of ‘Drishyam’ with his ‘Mr Fraud’.

The other biggest flops of the year are Prithviraj’s ‘London Bridge’, Fahad-Murali Gopi team’s ‘I by Two’, veteran director Joshiy’s ‘Salam Kashmir’ starring Jayaram and Suresh Gopi, and Dulquer Salman’s ‘Salala Mobiles’.
