Surprisingly, the one redeeming feature in the film is the CGI work, which is imaginative and beautiful in a way that CGI rarely is. But a few inspired moments can’t keep The Huntsman from seeming like the unwanted sequel to a film no one thought very highly of in the first place.This slow-witted sequel is a blatant attempt to build a franchise where none exists.

What happens when their movie’s idea of comic relief is restricted, offensively, to dwarves? What happens when the actors - all paid for, mind you - decide on doing some of the most garbled Scottish accents imaginable? And what happens when a genius like James Newton Howard composes the soundtrack to a sinking ship and Phedon Papamichael photographs how it all goes down?

The least anticipated prequel-slash-sequel of the year. In 2012, Snow White and the Huntsman was an unimaginative reimagining of the Snow White legend that played up an implied Twilight-y contest between two suitor. Snow White and Kristen Stewart have been chillingly banished from this derivative follow-up, in which Charlize Theron and Emily Blunt prove hard to warm to.

The movie is most awkward when it tries to hybridize its bedtime-story, Disney-stamped DNA with the genetic stock of contemporary cable drama. There is not as much blood and skin on display here, of course, but the movie seems desperate for the grown-up credibility that hints of sex and gore might offer.
