This extravagantly silly ersatz epic has a lunatic conviction you can't help but admire. Like so many of Hollywood’s sword-and-sandal offerings, this interminable ersatz epic consigns most of the human race to a sea of digital extras while subjecting its immortal characters to more than two hours’ worth of big-screen deification.

Not only is Alex Proyas’ new film borderline unwatchable, it’s irredeemably so.Honestly, the film grows stupider by the scene. Gods of Egypt plays out much like a video game: One that feels like watching a particularly ill-mannered teen play. The film, pun fully intended, is an ungodly mess.

Even as this movie teases you with its absurdity, it also offers you moments of beauty that shimmer like the outstretched wings of a goddess and moments of wit that surface in a hideaway wittily populated by duplicates of the same god, who’s having a ball talking to himself and himself and himself.

Gods of Egypt is stuck in that uncomfortable middle ground of being arguably immoral by having white people playing Egyptians but also being pretty good. Because Gods of Egypt is really fun. What’s doubly frustrating is that Gods of Egypt could easily have avoided becoming the definitive example of everything wrong and stupid with whitewashing.
