It's the contrast between the divine and the real perspectives. A beautiful and bold presentation of a simple theme underlines the filmmaker's craft. Going through the unconventional terrains, this film simply creates stunning and realistic moments.

The haunting theme has its share of irony and it takes a potshot at the social hypocrisy. While one layer unfolds the spiritual approach to a female deity, the other layer is annoying once you realise the social reality. "S Durga", with its running time of 90 minutes, thus goes eloquent sans relying on familiar filmic embellishments to introduce an unfamiliar treatment.

Since Sanal Kumar Sasidharan approaches his subjects with a realistic perspective, this movie has enough tentacles to choke you as well. The scaring silence of the midnight is surely a trope to indicate the darkness that has engulfed the space of a woman. Even while accompanied by her lover Kabir (Kannan Nayar), the female character Durga (Rajshri Deshpande) is not safe. The eloping couple from different religion are stranded on a desolate road at midnight and seeking hitch-hike in a van pushes them into trouble.

Sanal Kumar exposes the social hypocrisy with bizarre visuals; beginning from temple rituals and extending them onto the road, which has an eerie premise in the wee hours of night. He uses the camera as a mute witness, and the objectivity is beautifully sustained. The sarcasm lies in the portrayal of the commotion at temple while performing a ritual, and the eccentricities of youths in the van.

The impassive minds also get the thrash from the director in his typical narration that happens at night. As a woman, the approach to Durga is biased: sacrifice and tolerance only go to the deity. The odd visuals created by Prathap Joseph from all possible angles lend adequate mystery to the film.

It's the contrast between the divine and the real perspectives. A beautiful and bold presentation of a simple theme truly underlines the filmmaker's craft. Going through the unconventional terrains, this film simply creates stunning and realistic moments. An impressive treatment makes the difference!

The movie discusses the anomaly of the Goddess Durga being venerated and pleased through masochistic rituals like Garudanthookkam and running on burning embers in a country like India when in the night a poor hapless woman with the same name is subjected to countless torture and humiliation at the hands of male human beasts. The director deliberately does not put a full stop to the story as such cruelties are ever going to continue. Don't miss this opportunity to see a thought provoking cinema
