Director Navdeep Singh’s gritty new film Laal Kaptaan totally relies on Saif Ali Khan’s charismatic character of a Naga sadhu, and the actor does not disappoint. He pulls out another ace from up his sleeve with this story of a Naga sadhu (Khan as Gosain, pronounced Gosai, an ascetic cult of Naga sadhus worshiping Lord Shiva) out to avenge his father’s death.

Laal Kaptaan, is an ambitious story about deceit and valour. The film takes a quick visit back in history to the times when East India Company was making rapid strides in India, buying allies and bullying foes –Mughals, Rohillas, Marathas- to establish complete control over India. It really is a great story by director Navdeep Singh and Deepak Venkatesh. Unfortunately by the time the story moves from the storyboard onto film it gets lost in translation.

The Saif Ali Khan-led period saga ‘Laal Kaptaan’ keeps harping on about death being the ubiquitous leveller and how it’s a reality that can’t be evaded. While it’s a grim prospect, the sobering death knell was sitting through this bloated revenge drama that picks up pace sporadically. Even if the title character’s sagacious pronouncements don’t kill you, the movie is dangerously close to us turning us murderous with frustration.
