"ABCD" is a beautiful and sensitively crafted affair. Although it is slow moving and subdued, the characters are so vibrant that it is utterly absorbing.

The movie is a very humane experience raising interesting moral questions about man-woman relationship.

Although the message here is familiar, the setting adds welcome poignancy. Home is where the heart is, and this film has plenty of heart and also tells us a little something about the home that forms it.

The story revolves around Anand (Shaam) a smart bloke in search of a job, Chandra (Sneha), a widow, Bharathy (Nandhana) a temperamental woman driven hard by revolutionary ideas, and Divya Daisy (Aparna) an orphan attempting to build her own life.

Anand lives in a portion of a house owned by an orthodox Brahmin.Anand meets Bharathy, when she runs pillar to post to find her lost academic certificates.Anand helps her find the certificates. From there on they become friends. He learns about Bharathy and her caring nature when she tells him about her familial bonds and responsibilities. He begins to share Bharathy's burden. Bharathy attracted by his kind-heartedness, falls in love with him.

In another incident, Anand comes across Divya Daisy when he rescues her from a near fatal accident and admits her in a hospital. He learns about Divya and her efforts to settle in life on her own. They both become close friends. Over a period of time, Divya develops a fascination for Anand and opens her heart for him.

Meanwhile, Chandra comes back to her parents' house as a widow. Anand meets Chandra and learns about her miserable past. Chandra was wedded to a cantankerous man and a drunkard (played by Saravana Subbhiah – the film's director). She silently suffers his torture and leads a very messy life. Chandra's husband dies in an accident and she returns to her parent's house.

It is only after meeting Anand, that Chandra tastes the sweetness of life. Her life blossoms once again. A strong bond is formed between them woven with their shared passion for life.

Now, Anand comes to the center stage. He is in a fix, what with all three women show their affection for him in equal measure. Which one Anand chooses to marry forms the remaining part of the story.

Director Saravana Subbhiah is back after a long gap. His last feature was Citizen, an action flick. In ABCD, he largely deals with human relationships.

His direction matches the quiet expressiveness of his characters. He allows his camera the time to gaze upon their everyday lives and quiet interactions. The result is a thoughtful, compelling and involving drama in which the ordinary becomes the extraordinary. Thanks, not to a big budget or effects, but to those most simple tools of filmmaking – performance, direction and characterization.

Shaam has played his part convincingly. It is Sneha who steals the limelight with her enthralling performance. Aparna and Nandhana have seized the opportunity to display their acting prowess.

The major drawbacks that makes the movie fall short of becoming a memorable one are: D.Imman's average music, Vadivelu's childish comedy, misplaced song sequences, and forced action scenes.

On the whole, this movie is sure not to leave you disappointed.
