A storyline that could have made for a neat and lively entertainer gone off the track due to poor scripting and bad direction - that's what the Anil-directed Jayaram-starrer Parthan Kanda Paralokam is.

Parthan is a do-gooder living in a small village named Krishnapuram. A staunch atheist, Parthan is constantly at clash with his uncle Phalgunan Thampy, who is also the Panchayath President. Phalgunan is least bothered about the welfare of the people. In fact he is keen on grabbing the assets of the village temple, which has been closed for long and also on wresting the ancestral house in which Parthan and his mother live. Parthan has with him a group of like-minded people, including Suleiman and Poonkodi.

In the meantime, Phalgunan Thampy's daughter Sathyabhama returns from town as an advocate. She pretends to be in love with Parthan, but her intentions are in fact to help her father in fighting it out with Parthan in the court (A legal tussle has been going on about the possession of the temple, Parthan taking the stand that the temple belongs to the people of Krishnapuram). When things go wrong at the court, Parthan gets agitated and is sentenced to one month's imprisonment for contempt of court.

After Parthan is released, he goes to the temple town of Guruvayoor to attend a marriage. There he and his friends party, drinking illicit liquor. The hooch kills some of his friends while Parthan, who at first is declared dead, mysteriously comes back from the realm of death. This changes his life.

Jayaram as Parthan is his usual self, neither bad nor too good. Sreedevika as Sathyabhama is OK. Jagathy Sreekumar as Phalgunan Thampy does justice to his role while Mukesh, who appears later in the film as Madhavan, a very mysterious character, is also good, but could have been better and his character could have been better worked out. Kalabhavan Mani doesn't impress in his not-so-insignificant role towards the end of the movie. Kottayam Nazeer as Suleiman is good while Salim Kumar as Phalgunan Thampy's aide Karunan is passable.

Anandakuttan's cinematography is OK. There's nothing much to be said about other technical aspects. The songs don't impress much. In total the film fails to impress or entertain, courtesy poor scripting and characterization and inept direction.
