'Mr. Peabody' tops North American box office

Los Angeles, March 17 (IANS) DreamWorks Animation's "Mr. Peabody And Sherman" has become a box office victory in its second week of release, while the highly expected car racing film "Need For Speed" trailed in third.


The 3-D animated "Mr. Peabody And Sherman," a comedy about a hyper-intelligent, time-traveling dog and his adopted boy, took in an estimated $21.2 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, falling 34 percent as predicted by its studio, Xinhua reported.


To date, the kid-friendly film distributed by 20th Century Fox has grossed $63.2 million in 10 days in North America.


Last week's champion "300: Rise Of An Empire" plummeted 58 percent to $19.1 million. The first "300" had dropped 54 percent in its second weekend. So far, the sequel has collected $78.3 million.


This week's debut "Need For Speed", which is based on a video game that has sold more than 140 million copies, opened in third place with $17.8 million in sales at 3,115 locations.


3D theaters accounted for 43 percent of this 66 million DreamWorks Pictures' revenue. The audience gave the movie a "B+" CinemaScore. Only 24 percent of critics show thumb-up to it from Rotten Tomatoes. Click the Movie button below for more info:
