Haynes pays tribute to Ledger at awards function

Feb 24, 2008

London, Feb 24 (IANS) Director Todd Haynes paid tribute to late actor Heath Ledger for his "dazzling creative spirit" at the recently held Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Haynes, who worked with Ledger in "I'm Not There", said: "We all loved him so dearly. He really was unlike anybody I've ever known, he was more of a creative partner than an actor."

Haynes, who was picking up the first Robert Altman Award for director and ensemble cast, also hailed Ledger as a director of "diverse music videos". He also revealed that the actor was about to make his film directorial debut before he died in January, contactmusic.com reports.

He added: "He had just started circulating a feature script that he was planning to direct - an adaptation of 'The Queen's Gambit' by Walter Tevis.

"I have no doubt he would have made an astounding director. I treasure the time we shared on this film ('I'm Not There') and the love and talent that he gave so freely."
