Proud of Slumdog & Winslet, says Brown

London, Feb 23 (IANS) British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Monday congratulated the makers of "Slumdog Millionaire", which won eight Academy Awards, including for Best Picture and Best Director for Danny Boyle.


"I would like to congratulate Danny Boyle and all those who worked on 'Slumdog Millionaire' on winning an incredible eight Academy Awards," Brown said.


"I was lucky enough to see the film myself and understand how it has captured the imagination of people all over the world. Its success is truly well-deserved."


Brown spoke after a night of British successes at the Oscars, with Kate Winslet taking home the Best Actress award for "The Reader".


Later, arriving in Southampton for a Cabinet 'awayday', Brown said: "I am incredibly proud of the Oscar success of 'Slumdog Millionaire' and Kate Winslet, and I congratulate everybody who has contributed to the success."


"Britain is showing it has the talent to lead the world. I think we should be very proud of what are great British successes."


"It shows that Britain is leading the world not just in film but fashion, music and design - and long may that be the case - as a result of the great talent that we have," he added.
