'Angry young man' Suresh Gopi returns with a bang

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 5 (IANS) Suresh Gopi, the "angry young man" of Malayalam films, has returned with a bang in his latest film "Bharath Chandran IPS" that was released in theatres across Kerala this week.

Gopi, 46, had taken a nearly three-year sabbatical from the tinsel world for personal reasons before making a comeback.

The star had to flee a theatre in Kochi screening "Bharath Chandran IPS" Thursday because frenzied fans would not allow him to watch his comeback film in peace.

"This is one moment I will cherish for the rest of my life and without any doubt I can say that no one in the industry has been able to experience the lovely moments I am having now," Gopi told IANS.

In an earlier interview just before he faced the arc lights for this film, he had said a coterie had worked against him.

Asked about the coterie now, pat came the reply from the superstar. "I am (no longer facing) warriors who were ready to fight and enemies are clearing out and some of them have already been transformed," he said.

Equally relieved is veteran script writer Renji Panicker, who makes his debut as director with "Bharath Chandran IPS".

"I am relieved and breathing easy. This film was in my mind for the past year and now I am going to lie back and watch its success," said Panicker.

"Bharath Chandran IPS" delves deep into current political events and Panicker is at home handling such topics, just as he was with the 13 films he scripted.

The new film is a sequel to the blockbuster "Commissioner", released in the late 1980s that shot Gopi to superstardom alongside Mammootty and Mohanlal.

The total cost of "Bharath Chandran IPS" was kept under Rs.20 million. "In a matter of four weeks, my film will recover its costs and to me this is a double success because I am also its producer," said Panicker.

Gopi, who has acted in over 200 films in a career spanning 19 years, was upset when asked if the latest film proved that he is fit only for action roles.

"I do not have to prove anything and please do not push me, because if you do, I will call Jayaraj and ask him to do a film like 'Kaliyattom' which, if you do not know, was done just because of a standoff with the Mathurbhoomi newspaper. I do not mind taking up such a challenge again," said a determined Gopi.
