Malayalam - Top 5 actors of 2004
Dec 30, 2004 Hari Krishnan Dec 30
It was the turn of senior stars in 2004 as the previous year went into the kitty of junior stars. Mamootty and Mohanlal remained the favorite stars of Keralites. Dozens of new projects are awaiting them and that can keep them in the top position at least for the coming two years.
Here are the list of top 5 actors in 2004.

Mamootty
The first half of the year gave him much awaited hit from K. Madhu’s ‘Sethurama Iyer CBI’. Mamootty reached his fans with movies in every festival season and that reflected in the collections. ‘Kazcha’ directed by Blessy gave him the second hit and the performance was remarkable.
‘Vajram’, ‘Aparichitan’, ‘Black’ and ‘Vesham’ were the other films released. Though ‘Vajram’ and ‘Aparichitan’ fell in the box office, ‘Black’ was entirely different. Variety of roles was the significance offered to him, he appeared as investigating officer, wildlife photographer and a simpleton Kuttanadan.

Mohanlal
His crowd puller image remained intact though he lacked a super-hit film. His five films ‘Vamanapuram Bus Route’, ‘Vismayathumpathu’, ‘Natturajavu’, ‘Wanted’ and ‘Mambazhakkalam’ accumulated huge initial collection. In which ‘Mambazhakkalam’ is still doing well in the low class theatres. His first Kannada movie ‘Love’ is coming to Malayalam as ‘Aye Taxi’. But none of his characters from 2004 movies will be remembered.

Dileep
The popular star image seems to be a burden for Dileep as he failed to generate a super-hit. “Runway” is the only success for Dileep in 2004. ‘Vettam’, ‘Kathavasheshan’, ‘Perumazhakallam’, and ‘Rasikan’ were the other films released. In which Dileep had given an excellent performance in T.V Chandran’s ‘Kathavasheshan’. One should feel Dileep unlucky since most of his movies were above average in content and presentation compared to other stars performances.

Jayaram
A safe running star symbol makes him more comfortable that the audience never think of huge stuff from him. Jayaram with his movie ‘Mayilattam’ attains the fourth position. The film has achieved the production cost. His other movie ‘Salpperu Ramankutty’ bombed at the box office. Jayaram’s Christmas release ‘Amrutham’ is generating good initial reports.

Prithviraj
No other contenders for this spot make Prithvi the fifth star of the year 2004. Of his three films ‘Vellinakshtram’, ‘Satyam’ and ‘Akale’, the first two films directed by Vinayan did some business in the box office but the huge production cost made it in the flop chart. Akale’ directed by Shyamaprasad was neither a hit nor a turning point to his career. But Prithvi's role in 'Akale' should be appreciated.
His career got a setback when the actors association AMMA imposed a ban over him. He lost several projects and that forced him to act in a Tamil movie ‘Kanaa Kanden’ along with Srikanth and Gopika.
