Niszar in conversation with Nowrunning!

Nov 4, 2008 NR

There was a time when Niszar was one of the most prolific of filmmakers in mainstream Malayalam Cinema. He used to churn out movies one after the other, most of them entertainers of the lighter vein.

Almost all of them were low-budget flicks and featured in the cast a bunch of youngsters who were nowhere near the top as actors. And then, for a long gap of time, Niszar wasn't heard of at all. Now the director is all set to make a come back, with a couple of releases having Suresh Gopi in the lead, namely 'Bullet' and 'Boss'.

Niszar opens up in an interview given to nowrunning.com on the sets of 'Boss' in Kochi. Excerpts:

You are returning to direction after a considerable gap of time. How do you account for this rather long gap?

The gap that you are speaking of resulted from a decision of mine not to do smaller kind of films, at least for some time. And so, I stayed away from filmmaking for some time, so that I could return with some bigger kind of movies.

There was a time when you went on doing film after film, in a very prolific manner. Would it be the same way again?

Not this time anyway. This time I wish to do films a bit more carefully, choosing films based on the subject.

Your first film Sudhinam was a very well-made, touching and sensitive kind of movie. But after that you had been doing low budget comedy capers mostly, and that too of dubious quality. Why so?

Of course Sudhinam was a good movie. But after that I had to go with the trend and make the smaller kind of films to survive.

It's good that you are making a comeback with Bullet and Boss. What is Bullet all about?

It's a predominantly action-oriented movie. The film has as the backdrop the television reality shows that are quite popular these days. There is this reality show kind of thing, there is a murder taking place and there is the investigation - drama and action stuff all through.

And what about Boss?

Boss is of a lighter vein when compared to Bullet. There is action of course, but it's basically a light veined entertainer kind of thing. The film takes us to a colony in Fort Kochi, where we come across two gangs of goons, one led by Boss, the protagonist and the other led by Malli. And then enters an actress named Pooja, who is very popular in Tamil and Telugu cinema. With the entry of Pooja, things take a twist in the lives of the goons, especially Boss. Suresh Gopi becomes Boss while Vasundhara Das plays the character of Pooja.

So when are these two movies getting released?

Very soon. The two films are almost finished and both of them will be released, one after the other, very soon.

Any other project in the offing?

Of course. My next film would be a Kalabhavan Mani-starrer, produced by the Plaza Group.
