'Rajamanickam' makes Mammootty top Malayalam star

Kochi, Jan 7 (IANS) The new year has set in with hope. The euphoria over the success achieved last year has given a fillip to the industry to continue with the good work.

Among the actors, Mammootty is going places.

The top five Malayalam films are:

1. "Rajamanickam": The film's record-breaking success has pushed Mammootty on the popularity charts. With the maximum number of hits to his credit and a couple of promising projects under the belt, he is sure to continue this trend at least for a while.

2. "Bus Conductor": This Christmas release starring Mammootty is panned by critics and the audience is having mixed feelings about the film. It will be interesting to see if the star's charisma can pull it through.

3. "The Tiger": Suresh Gopi in an investigative story was expected to create fireworks at the box office. But "The Tiger" got a lukewarm reception from fans - which has put the actor's future plans in jeopardy.

4. "Tanmatra": Mohanlal's portrayal of an Alzheimer's patient has got all-round applause, but the humble actor has given credit for his performance to director Blessy.

5. "Anandabhadram": Santosh Sivan's brand name had pulled this film till now. But how will its success help Prithviraj's career is yet to be seen.
