13 films releasing ahead of Deepavali

As many as 13 films are lined up for release this month, just ahead of Deepavali. Because the festival of lights is considered the best of seasons for big budget movies starring mega stars.

Nov. 7 (Deepavali) is the targeted date of release of blockbuster movies like Kamal Haasan's "Dasavatharam", Vijay's "Azhagiya Thamizh Magan", Vikram's "Bheema" and Ajith's "Billa".

A dearth of theatres in Tamil Nadu is the main cause of concern for producers and distributors and they fear that the new films that are ready could not make it to theatres all at the same time around the time of Deepavali. No film was released during the Tamil month of 'Adi" which is considered as a lean season for festivities. As a result, new films waiting to be released have piled up increasing the pressure on the available theatre space.

To avoid the rat race for theatres as Deepavali draws near, producers and distributors plan to release 13 films by the end of this month. They have drawn up a release schedule according to which "Marudamalai", "Cheena-Thaana 001 and "Thoovanam" will hit the screens on Sept.7; "Theekutchi", "18 Vayadu Puyale" and "Vegam" on Sept. 14; "Bommalattam", "Kannamuchi Enada", "Malaikottai" and "Sringaram" on Sept. 21; and "Polladavan", "Chivi" and "Sila Nerangalil" on Sept. 28.

Releasing so many films in a month is something that has not happened in recent times. Reports attributed to distributors and other sources, the date of release of "Polladavan" (Sept. 28) is only tentative and there may be a postponement. There are doubts about "Malaikottai" also. According to its director Bhupathi Pandian, efforts are being made to release the film even before Sept.21. A postponement is also likely if it is found unavoidable.
