28 films released in August _ a record

August 2012 was a month of bumper harvest with as many as 28 films releasing in Tamil Nadu. This is the highest number for a month since the inception of Tamil cinema. “A remarkable achievement” say film industry circles.



Normally a minimum of four or five films released every month and the maximum number never exceeded 21 before August. This is the first time since the start of the Tamil film industry that 28 films hit the screens in a single month.



Of the 28 films released, 23 were straight Tamil films and five dubbed in Tamil.



Only one of them _ Director Mysskin’s ‘Mugamoodi’ that released on the last day of August _ was the big budget flick.



’18 Vayasu’, ‘Naan’, ‘Eppadi Manasukul Vandai’, ‘Edo Seidai Ennai’, and ‘Pondi Oliperukku Nilayam’ fell under the category of’medium budget films.



‘Madubanakkadai’, ‘Panithuli’, ‘Palayamkottai’, ‘Thooya’, ‘Aasami’, ‘Yugam’, ‘Eruvan’, ‘Atta katthi’, ‘Mudalvar Mahatma’, ‘Poovampatti’, ‘Anil’, ‘Avan Appadithan’, ‘Acharyangal’, ‘Peruman’ and ‘Valiban Chutrum Ulagam’, were all small budget films.



‘Gokulathil Kannan’ 3D was an animation film and ‘Adisiya Ulagam’ was a 3D movie.



The 28 films included two Hollywood flicks _ ‘Total Recall’ and ‘Expendable 2’ (dubbed in Tamil), one Hindi film dubbed in Tamil titled ‘Adangathavan’, ‘Dil Dil Manathil’ (Malayalam) and ‘Korukkupettai Kooli’ (Kannada).
