A temporary trophy for 'Aaru'

Chennai, Jan 5 (IANS) The fact is "Aaru" is not "Ghajini". This mindless violent film is at number one position only because there weren't any Christmas and New Year releases. Unlike "Ghajini", "Aaru" could manage only average collections even in the second week.

The top five Tamil films are:

1. "Aaru"; Director: Hari. This first film from director Saran's production house Gemini Productions offers gory fare, which a family audience could well detest. That's why it is limping at the box office.

2. "Kanda Naal Mudhal"; Director: Priya. There aren't many female directors in the Tamil film industry, and it was tough for Priya, an assistant to Mani Ratnam, to get her first film.

"Kanda Naal Mudhal" was made thanks to Prakash Raj, the producer. Urban Tamil families prefer a film like this. That is why it has climbed to the number two position. It is great news for both Priya and Prakash Raj.

3. "Thavamayi Thavamirundu"; Director: Cheran. This is a sensitive film, which will make you cry and definitely not elicit an irreverent guffaw. Its length has hurt its box office success. Of course, it is a hit, though not as big as "Autograph" was.

4. "Sandakozhi"; Director: Lingusamy. "Sandakozhi" is a surprise hit. This fast-paced action film is a success because of actor Vishal's mind-blowing action and Meera Jasmine's comedy. After "Chellame", Vishal has done it again.

5. "Vanakkam Thalaiva"; Director: Sakthi Paramesh: Satyaraj and Vivek form a deadly comedy combination in this film and people in the rural areas seem to have loved their comedy.
