Sundar C and Sneha will play the lead in a film to be made on the novel "Surulimalai" written by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The novel was serialized in the DMK organ "Murasoli" in 1957.

"Surulimalai" is the third story penned by Karunanidhi to be made into a film this year, the first two being "Uliyin Osai" and "Ponnar Sankar"

Ilavenil, who directed "Oliyin Osai" an adaptation of Karunanidhi's "Sarapallam Samundi", will direct the new film based on "Surulimalai". "T.Nagar" Seeman will produce the yet-to-be titled film.

Set in the rural milieu, "Surulimalai" is a love story which looks at the social ills of authoritarianism and enslavement in the name of culture.

Karunanidhi may not actually write the dialogues for the new film, but his original writing will be retained as much as possible, according to Ilavenil. He says Karunanidhi's stories have an enduring value for film-makers.

Karunanidhi's association with cinema goes back to 1947. His early films with Sivaji Ganesan and MGR were big hits. He had been off film scripting for 10 years and returned to it in 2005 with "Kannamma".
