A group of specialists in sound effects is makin an audio film on Kalki’s widely acclaimed Tamil classic ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ for the benefit of today’s youngsters who would not have read it or could not read Tamil.

Bharath, a sound designer, along with his team, Vivek (sound designer), Prathap ( chief sound effects engineer), Balaji and Raj Mohan (Foley Walker), is working on the project. They got the inspiration from the audio versions of the Dan Brown and Harry Potter series.

Bharath and his team have already finished making Chapter 19 of Volume 1 of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’. It is given the title ‘Rana Gala Aaranyam’. The project will be completed in another 10 months depending on the availability of funds.

The team will have a tie-up with a company for marketing the audio film which can be stored in digital devices.

Bharath and his team have been responsible for the excellent sounds effects of several hit films like ‘Vaaranam Ayiram’, ‘Pudupettai’, ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’, ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’, ‘Yuddham Sei’, ‘Aadukulam’, ‘Vaagai Sooda Va’ and ‘Payanam’.

Bharath says they have a database of 6.5 crore sounds _ from the chugging of a train to the rustling of dry leaves.

What is an audio movie? Artistes perform in front of the mike instead of the camera. The complete story is enacted with all the ingredients of a regular film sans visual elements.
