Censors block Sathyaraj's 'Adavadi'

Veteran actor Sathyaraj's rationalist thoughts and his efforts to propagate them among the masses have landed his new film "Adavadi" in trouble. The film was to have been released before Christmas.

The film, directed by Bharath Hanna, has been denied a certificate by the Regional Censor Board on the grounds that some scenes would hurt the sentiments of a particular community. The director made a representation to the Censor Board officials but they stood the ground.

The producer and the director have now decided to go in appeal against the regional board's decision.

Sathyaraj plays the role of a film director in "Adavadi". A particular scene to which the censor board members took strong exception is the one in which Sathyaraj feels distressed after visiting a home for the mentally-ill. In anguish he goes to a temple, delivers a long-winding dialogue abusing the deity for the evils in society and in uncontrollable fury, he damages the idol and throws it into a well, calling for the demolition of all temples which spawn mindless superstitions.

A staunch follower of the founder of the rationalist movement in Tamil Nadu, EVR Periyar, Sathyaraj dons the lead role in the film titled " Periyar" now under production. Kushboo plays the role of Periyar's second wife, Maniammai, in the film, directed by ex-bureaucrat Rajasekharan to whom the Tamil Nadu Government has granted Rs. 90 lakh to produce the film.

It is well-known that Sathyaraj's missionary zeal to propagate EVR's ideals through his films has wounded the sentiments of a particular community. "Adavadi" is one such film which has now run into rough weather.
