Censors have imposed 100 cuts on Director S.T. Vendhan’s ‘Mayanginen Thayanginen’, produced by Rajeswari Vendhan on behalf of Thaimann Thiraiyagam. In addition to the 100 cuts, the censors have also wanted the dialogue muted in at least 10 places. Only after the makers agreed to have these cuts and the dialogue muted In 10 places, has the censor board granted a ‘U’ certificate for the film.

Originally the censor board had said it would give the film an ‘A’ certificate, for it had too much of violence and titillating scenes. The makers pleaded with the Censors for a ‘U’ so as to get the tax exemption. Then the censors imposed 100 cuts and wanted the dialogue muted in at least 10 places. The makers complied with the censors’ advice and secured ‘U’ certificate. This is perhaps the first time ever that a Tamil film had to undergo so many cuts.

Director Vendhan said they had to agree to the censor board’s cuts as they badly needed a ‘U’ certificate to avail themselves of the tax benefit. But he affirmed that the cuts made would not sap the essence of the film and it would convey what the director intended to convey.

The film highlights the abuses of women inmates of some mental asylums in Chennai. Its release has been scheduled for June 1.

Nitin Sathya, Tharun Shatriya, Ganja Karuppu, Nisha Pande, Devashri are among those in the cast.

Problems the lovers face if they hide their love from others and hardships they are put to if they let it be known are boldly dealt with in the film. Vendhan himself has written the story and screenplay.
