Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa at a function on Aug 29, felicitated music directors M.S. Viswanathan and T.K. Ramamurthi. She honoured MSV with the title ‘Thirai Isai Chankravarthi’ and presented MSV and Ramamurthi with 60 gold coins and new cars.

Superstar Rajinikanth, ‘Ulaganayagan’ Kamala Haasan, A.V.M. Saravanan, Isai Gnani Ilaiyaraja, playback singers and several other film personalities attended the function, which marked Jaya TV’s 14th anniversary.

Jayalalithaa regretted that the Central Government had rejected her Government’s recommendation last year that MSV be awarded Padma Bhushan. Times would change when she would certainly get the Padma award for MSV, she said.

The Chief Minister described the period of Viswanathan-Ramamurthi as a golden era in Tamil cinema music. The duo had composed songs for 700 films starting from MGR’s ‘Jenovah’ to ‘Ayirathil Oruvan’. MSV had scored music for thousands of songs for more than 1,200 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. MSV is again the only music director who has the credit of singing more than 500 songs.

Paying her respects to ‘Periyavar’ T.K. Ramamurthi, Jayalalithaa said he is not only a great composer but also a violin vidwan with a magic touch.

She said she would pray for their long life so they would inspire and guide younger music aspirants.
