Producer-Director M.V. Gopal Ram, who has completed 25 years in the film industry with 112 films to his credit, has been conferred the Dadasheb Phalke Academy Award for the south.

While the Union Government's Dadasaheb Award is given to a veteran every year, Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award (DPAA) is presented to one person from each of the four regions based on the recommendations of the regional film chambers.

The South Indian Film Chamber had recommended Gopal Ram's name for the 2012 DPAA award for the south and the Governing Council, accepting the recommendation, honoured Gopal Ram with the award.

Gopal Ram started his career as an assistant to Richard Attenborough when he was making 'Gandhi'.

Earlier, Gopal Ram had assisted James Ivory in 'Heat and Dust' and worked with renowned South Indian directors K.S. Sethumadhavan, K. Bappiah, K. Murali Mohan Rao, K. Rajasekhar and B. Gopal.

He has written the dialogues for several films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
