Hindu Munnani threatens to block 'Dasavatharam' release

Hindu Munnani has warned that it would block the release of "Dasavatharam" if scenes which in its perception are objectionable and wound the religious sentiments of the Hindus are not removed.

Rama Gopalan, one of the front-line leaders of the Hindu Munnani, has, in a statement, said 'controversial' scenes showing the idols of some Hindu deities being damaged or destroyed in the clashes between the Vaishnavites and Saivites in the 16th century are understood to have been included in "Dasavatharam".

Rama Gopalan said that these scenes would further weaken the Hindu community.

He dared Kamal Haasan to make a film on the atrocities committed during Malkapur's invasion when fearing raids on Hindu temples, the idol of Sri Ranganatha was removed from the Srirangam temple by the Vaishnavites and hidden away for 43 years. Though these are historical facts, would the State Government and the Censor Board allow it, he asked.

Rama Gopalan warned that if the controversial scenes in "Dasavatharam" are not removed, the Hindu Munnani with public support would launch a State-wide agitation and stop the release of the film. Nowhere in Tamil Nadu would the film be allowed to be screened, he stressed in the statement.

Kamal Haasan plays ten roles in the film produced by Oscar Ravichandran. The story dates back to the 12th century.
