Comedian Vadivelu is a very happy man today with "Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi" in which he starred for the first time as a hero, has been declared as a 'box office blockbuster' even as it entered its third week of running in Tamil Nadu.

A historical satire directed by debutant Simbu Devan and produced by Shanker, "Imsai Arasan'' has surpassed all expectations and taken by the box office by storm all over Tamil Nadu.

Nearly 80 per cent of the collections so far have been registered at theatres in and around Chennai. It had an excellent opening with a little more than 200 prints and now 35 to 40 additional prints are being added every week as the demand from exhibitors in rural areas has also been growing.

With this film making it big at the box office, video pirates have become hyperactive in the grey market. With reports pouring in, the Video Piracy Cell, Chennai, has been conducting extensive raids. Last week, the Superintendent of Police, Video Piracy Cell, himself conducted raids in Avadi, Ambattur and other suburban areas and seized as many as 6,650 pirated prints. Pirated prints are also freely available in rural parts of the State. Each such print is prized Rs. 30 to 40 in Chennai and Rs. 45 to Rs. 50 in places like Madurai and Dindigul.

The debutant hero, Vadivelu, himself is his usual self. He has no ambition to become a hero. "Imsai" was just an accident and I am not keen on playing hero, he says. "I shot to fame playing comedy roles. It is my cup of tea. Nagesh is my role model. He now and then played hero, but was basically a comedy actor. I still love to do comedy roles."

Vadivelu has now half a dozen movies in the pipeline.
