In conversation with Tamannaah

Oct 30, 2009 Mythily Ramachandran

Chennai, Oct.30 (NR): Tamannaah has come a long way from her 'Kalloori,' days. Since then, she has worked with leading heroes, such as Surya in 'Ayan,' and Dhanush in 'Padikathavan.'

The pretty actress from Mumbai has her hands full and is living out of suitcases. Tamannaah talks about her much awaited release this Friday, 'Kandein kathalai,' a remake of 'Jab we met.' Mythily Ramachandran listens in.

What were the challenges of playing Kareena's role and how did you prepare?

I watched the original film several times to understand what really worked in the film. This feel good film relied a lot on positivity that came through the dialogues and the love portrayed. Kareena's character was energetic and warm oozing with positivity. I have tried to bring this out in my character and have put in my best. I am hoping that the audience will sit back and enjoy.

What about the changes in the Tamil remake?

The screenplay is almost the same. The portions involving Santhanam, who plays Manjeet's character is elevated, more lengthy and funny.

Any difficult scenes that called for several retakes?

The first few days of shooting the train scenes were strenuous. We shot for three days and three nights. It is the pivotal scene and we wanted to get it perfect.

How was it working with director Kannan?

Kannan is very patient. He never got disturbed. He was calm even when things did not move to his satisfaction.

And working with Bharat?

Bharat and I were both excited about the film. We loved the original and often discussed the story. Bharat is a meticulous person and was dedicated to the role. For him this role, that of a sober businessman was a new experience.

Any comments by Imtiaz Ali?

He was happy with the way the songs have turned out. He liked the way the songs and dance have been made more colourful.

In a short span you have had the opportunity to work with leading heroes. How does it feel?

I am happy that my career is doing well, although some of my films, like 'Ananda thandavam,' did not do well at the box office. I take it in my stride. My professional growth has been slow and gradual. I like to experiment with different kind of roles and move on.

And working with Jeyam Ravi and Karthi?

In the film, 'Thillalangadi,' opposite Jeyam Ravi, I play a stylishly attired girl with a stubborn streak and temper. It's a commercial film with the thread of comedy running through the story. Jeyam fits the role well. He is a prankster, always up to some kind of mischief but a fabulous actor to work with.

We are through the last schedule of 'Paiyaa,' with Karthi. It is nothing like what I have done before. My character is very feminine and subtle without going over the top. Karthi is a dedicated and fantastic actor. It is easy to communicate with him. It was brave of Linguswamy to take up this subject that will appeal to all kinds of audience.

How do you overcome the language barrier?

It's been some time since I have worked in this industry. Now language is not much of an issue. I am familiar with basic communication. The directors go word by word with the dialogues and that helps. I am keen on dubbing for my own films and am working on that.

Any Bollywood plans?
