Producer-distributor Kalaipuli S. Thanu has bought the world rights of cinematographer-turned-director Santhosh Siva's 'Urumi'. This 170-minute film of epic proportions tells the story of Chiraykkal Kelu Nayanar (Prithviraj) who had vowed to kill Portuguese sailor Vasco Da Gama who had inflicted cruelties on Indians. Besides Prithviraj, it stars Genelia D'souza, Prabhu Deva, 'Madrasapattinam' Alex and Nithya Menon and features Vidya Balan, Arya and Tabu in cameo roles

'Urumi' was originally a Malayalam film and its stunning success made the makers of the film consider pushing it into the international arena as language is no longer a barrier. The film has been made in English with the title 'Vasco Da Gama'. It has also been dubbed in Hindi and other languages. The Tamil version is titled 'Padhinaitham Nootrandu Uraival'. It will be released before A.R. Murugadoss's 'Thuppaki' starring Vijay, which is now under production.

Thanu says the audience will get to see a different Arya, who has come up with a splendid performance.
