Mambattiyan: Some insights

Dec 3, 2011 PGV

This is perhaps the first time a son acts in a remake directed by his father who himself was the lead character in the original. No other actor other than Prasanth has this opportunity till now.

Thyagarajan had produced, directed and acted in the superhit action movie 'Malayur 'Mambattiyan' in 1983. After 28 years, Thyagarajan decided to remake it as 'Mambattiyan' with his son Prasanth taking his place as the lead character. Prasanth calls it 'modern' Mambattiyan.

'Malayur Mambattiyan' was a runaway success. It was remade in Hindi with Rajinikanth, in Kannada with Ambarish and in Telugu with Krishnam Raju. All of them became superhits. The audiences all over raved about the flick.

Prasanth's 'Mambattiyan' has been filmed on a lavish scale with the latest technology. Ilayaraja was the composer for 'Malayur Mambattiyan' and he sung the massy song 'Kattuvazhi Pora Penne'. In 'Mambattiyan', music director Dhaman has the song rendered by Thyagarajan in one version and Simbu in another version.

Prasanth had acted in 'Aanazhagan', 'Shock' and 'Ponnar Sankar' that were directed by his father.

'Mambattiyan' is slated to release on Dec.16. In Telugu the title of this movie is 'Bebbuli'. Thyagarajan's family production house, Lakshmi Shanti Movies, has produced this flick of pathos.

Playing opposite Prasanth is Meera Jasmine, the role donned by Saritha in 'Malayur Mambattiyan'. The others in the cast are Vadivelu (Kaundamani in the origina), Prakash Raj (Jaishankar) and Mumaith Khan (Jayamalini), besides Sangili Murugan, Riaz Khan, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Vijayakumar and many other actors.

According to Prasanth, a mammoth tent was erected in a thick jungle where all the film unit members stayed during the shooting. It was virtually a family life out there, he said and added nobody else would have had this nice experience in the past.

Several changes have been made in 'Mambattiyan' in keeping with the modern trends.

'So, it is modern Mambattiyan. Don't try to imagine, you will go wrong,' he quipped.

Commending the work of composer Dhaman, Prasanth said it was indeed a 'music durbar'. Today, Dhaman is No.1 in Tollywood.

The panoramic views of the jungles, their green canopy, cascading waters and other scenic sights have been captured through the lens of Shaji Kumar from all angles.

Supreme Sundar and Rakki Rajesh are behind the 'amazing' stunt scenes and Prasanth also has done some stunts without 'dupe'.

Prasanth is confident that the viewers will appreciate the hard work put in by him and others for 'Mambattiyan'.
