Film: "Manmadhan"; Composer: Yuvan Shankar Raja; Singers: Sadhana Sargam, Snehan, Anoushka, Na Muthukumar and K.K.

There is nothing exceptional about the music of "Manmadhan", though it is by no means intolerable or repugnant.

"Manmadhan", as most Tamil film viewers are aware, is Silambarasan's maiden foray into writing a story and screenplay. It features several top stars, including Jyothika, Mandira Bedi and Silambarasan himself.

One may have to wait a bit longer for "Manmadhan" to hit the screens. But the film's music has been released. It has been composed by Yuvan Shankar

Raja, whose recent release, "7 G Rainbow Colony", has become a success.

As one fingers the slickly packaged cassette, the question uppermost on one's mind is whether Raja can recreate the magic of "7 G Rainbow Colony".

The jacket includes a list of songs from the movie that those associated with the film love the most - rather out of the ordinary.

However, after listening to it for first time, one realises that this album belongs to an entirely different genre - a world apart from the soulful music of "7 G Rainbow Colony".

The first track, "Thathai thathai", is a rap number partially in English. If you're not among Eminem's greatest fans, you will, in all likelihood, dislike this number.

The second track, "Manmadhanae", sung by Sadhana Sargam and Snehan is far removed from "Thathai thathai". Nevertheless, the track evokes memories of a hit track from one of Silambarasan's previous releases, particularly the cloying female voice crying out for the hero's attention.

"Oh Mahirae" is another track worth mentioning, if only for the fact that one of the singers from pop band Viva, Anoushka, has lent her voice to this number. To be fair though, this song admittedly gets the feet tapping.

The Hindi lyrics have been rendered rather well by Anoushka. This however makes one ponder when a Tamil song will be sung completely in Tamil again.

The tracks "Vanamunna" and "Enn aasai mythiliye" are pedestrian at best and are worth listening to only if you are a diehard 'koothu' music fan.

However, the last track, "Kadhal valathein", is definitely the highlight of the entire album. Belted out with finesse by Na Muthukumar and K.K., this track has that haunting quality that set "7 G Rainbow Colony" apart - a quality that most other tracks in this album seem to lack.

The music of "Manmadhan" is no great shakes.
