"Mozhi", starring Jyothika and produced by Prakash Raj, is the first ever Tamil film that is available for home entertainment within a fortnight of its release in theatres.

Optical disc maker Moser Baer has tied up with the Pyramid Saimira Theatre to have this Tamil film launched in the retail home video segment. The discs would be out "very soon".

Moser Baer has revolutionized home entertainment by making available original discs at Rs 28 for VCDs and Rs 34 for DVDs. This has given a big push to home video retailing.

The company claims to have 2,000 outlets in Tamil Nadu and will increase the number as the demand requires. There are also plans to have online sales through the disc- maker's website from April.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Moser Baer and Pyramid Saimira earlier this week. Under the agreement, Moser Baer will retail its original VCDs and DVDs in 250 theatres and multiplexes coming under the Pyramid Saimira Theatre network.

Moser Baer entered the Tamil home entertainment market in January this year releasing a catalogue of 101 Tamil films which included some old hits of MGR, Sivaji, Rajini and Kamal. Nearly 10 lakh discs were sold out in the very first month, according to G. Dhananjayan, chief operating officer of Moser Baer. He says that with "Mozhi", the company hopes to set a trend where new films reach the home video format at the earliest.

Allaying the fears of film distributors that home theatre will badly affect them, Pyramid reasons that the overriding consideration is that home video retailing is the best way to check and end piracy.

Hindi films are released in disc format within weeks of their release.
