Music of 'Devathaiyai Kandein' falls flat

Film: "Devathaiyai Kandein"; Music Director: Deva; Singers: Dhanush, Sabesh, Srilekha Parthasarathy.

Tamil film "Devathaiyai Kandein", Deva's latest musical offering, is slated for release during the Pongal festival (Jan 14).

Dhanush, who stars in the film, is in dire need of a hit right now. Listening to the album, one begins to wonder whether Dhanush will benefit at all from the film's music.

The album opens with a track named "Mama Paiya" - a flat and boring tune reminiscent of some of the less inspiring tracks of the 1980s. The song also stretches on interminably, leaving you yawning.

The second track in the album, "Azhagae Brammandam", is intensely forgettable.

The third track starts off very interestingly, with a person saying something in heavily (Tamil) accented English, which is quite hilarious. The song, belted out by Sabesh and Srilekha Parthasarathy, fails to impress and sounds like hundreds of other "koothu" songs in Chennai today.

Side B, however, springs a pleasant surprise. "Thunda Kanum" (sung by Dhanush himself) is rather enjoyable. However, the vocals by Dhanush are nothing to write home about.

The last track, "Velakku Onnu", is another attempt at "koothu" music. And like most of the album, this effort falls flat on its face.

The album of "Devathayai Kandein" is one that can be safely avoided. Click the Movie button below for more info:
