Plea to Police to stay Dasavatharam shooting

Sep 13, 2006 P.V. Sathish Kumar

No sooner Kamal Haasan's "Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu" was released than the veteran actor is in the news again regarding his upcoming movie "Dasavatharam" the shooting of which began last month. He dons ten roles in this film directed by K.S. Ravikumar.

One Senthil Kumar (29), a resident of Kulakkarai, Tambaram West, has lodged a complaint with Chennai Police Commissioner Latika Saran that Kamal Haasan has used his story for "Dasavatharam" and requested the Commissioner to stay the shooting of the film.

Kamal Haasan has vehemently denied Senthil Kumar's allegation and said, "As far as I know such a thing has not happened. There are some people who are trying to gain publicity by claiming such things. For the police and me, there are better things to do."

Senthil Kumar's advocate told mediapersons that he woud move court if the police do not take action.

In his complaint to the Police Commissioner, Senthil Kumar alleged that he had worked as an assistant director under Gurumani for the film "Dhanush" which could not be completed. At present he is assisting Theerthamalai, the director of "Appadiya"

Senthil Kumar in his complaint says that as the shooting of "Dhanush" stopped midway, he wrote a story titled "Ardanari" . Then he also prepared the screenplay based on this story with the hero playing as many as ten roles surrounded by thousands of characters. This conceptualisation was unprecedented in the history of world cinema.

Senthil Kumar further claimed that as he thought that only Kamal suited for the lead role, the "photocard" containing the title of the story had been sent to the office of Kamal on T.T.K. Road, Alwarpet, Chennai, by registered post. Following this, Kamal's aide Murali called Senthil Kumar on phone and told him that Kamal wanted to meet him. Last year on August 8, Senthil Kumar met Murali at his office. Murali wanted to read the story in full and requested for a copy of it which was given to him on the spot. A week later, an advertisement appeared in a daily about the making of a film titled "Dasavatharam" in which Kamal would play ten roles and the film would be directed by K.S. Ravikumar . On seeing this advertisement, Senthil Kumar contacted Murali who assured him that Kamal would rope him in as an assistant director and he would be paid at the time of commencement of the shooting. But to his dismay, he learnt that the shooting of "Dasavatharam" had already started last month without his being taken on board. When Senthil Kumar contacted Murali and asked him about this, Kamal's aide retorted "Is it your story? Who talked to you over phone?."

Charging that he was cheated, Senthil Kumar, in his complaint, urged the Police Commissioner to stop the shooting of the film till the issue is sorted out.

The Police Commissioner has ordered an investigation into the matter.
