The Chennai police have decided not to take any legal action against Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat following a complaint that she was in indecent and revealing dress when she participated in the "Dasavatharam" audio release function in Chennai on April 25.

She was on the dais along with the Chief Minister Mr. M. Karunanidhi, Hollywood action hero Jackie Chan, Amitabh Bhachchan and Kamal Haasan. The function was held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Kaniraj of M.G.R. Nagar ledged a complaint with the Periamedu police station that the way Mallika Sherawat dressed for the occasion was not only obscene but against Tamil culture. It was outrageous especially when leaders like Mr. Karunanidhi were seated on the dais.

The Periamedu police on May 2 held consultations with lawyers seeking their opinion.. Joint Commissioner Dharmarajan, Assistant Commissioner Rajendran, Inspector Ashok Kumar and other police officers participated in the meeting with the lawyers.

It is learnt that the lawyers expressed the opinion that there was no provision in the law to take any action against Mallika Sherawat. "How a person dresses is a personal matter and there is no legal provision for moral policing," they told the police.

Recently a similar complaint had been made against actress Shreya who attended a film function in which the Chief Minister also participated, but she had tendered unqualified apology.
