Police slap legal notice on 'Nepali'

Apr 22, 2008 PVS

The police and politicians normally ignore films in which they are lampooned or projected in bad light But in the case of Bharat-starrer "Nepali", the police have taken serious view of certain scenes denigrating them.

M. Ravi, the joint commissioner of Police (north Chennai), has issued a lawyer's notice to Rama Saravanan, the producer of "Nepali" and Dorai, the director, taking exception to the way the police, prisons and the judiciary departments are portrayed in the film.

The notice has pointed out that the film has depicted the character of a police officer in such a way that it would bring disrepute to the whole department causing disaffection among the public. The police officer is projected as a nasty, repulsive villain in uniform and in a scene; he is shown raping a woman and forcing her to watch him undress.

The JCP's legal notice has warned the producer and the director of 'appropriate' action, both civil and criminal, if they fail to delete the objectionable scenes.

There are also objections to the alleged disrespect shown to the national flag in the beginning of the movie. Bedroom scenes have also received adverse comments.

Released earlier in April, "Nepali" is an 'average grosser'. The story is about revenge killings for the sexual abuse of women by men in high positions. The protagonist goes on the murderous rampage after serving a six-year jail term for killing an SI who raped his lover.
