Ace cinematographer and film-maker Santosh Sivan has received world recognition for his creativity and masterly touch with the American Society of Cinematographers admitting him into his fold.

Last week his celluloid epic ‘Urumi’ in Tamil was released in over 200 theatres across Tamil Nadu. It was reshot to avoid lip-sync problems. The Tamil version is running into its second week. It has a high profile cast. Prithviraj, Prabhu Deva, Genelia and Arya, Vidya Balan and Tabu make special appearances. ‘Urumi’ is a valiant story of warriors from the Malabar Coast who planned to kill Vasco Da Gama. Sivan painstakingly captured breathtaking martial arts and war in mostly natural light in the wildest of outdoor locations. The film was made with a modest budget. Visual effects are kept to the minimum.

Sivan has also almost completed shooting for director A.R. Murugadoss’s ‘Thuppaaki’ starring Vijay.

Sivan’s pet project is, however, ‘Ceylon. He will start working on this film after fulfilling his current commitments. ‘Ceylon’ is a story of four boys caught in the midst the ethnic struggle in Sri Lanka. Sivan is looking for right actors and once he finalises the cast, the project will start.

Sivan will soon begin shooting for Priyadarshan’s Hindi remake of ‘Nadodigal’.

He says the award winning Malayalam film ‘Manjadikuru’, directed by Anjali Menon will be released in Chennai as well. He is currently busy promoting this film which was recently released in Kerala after doing its rounds in the festival circuits.

“Because I did ‘Thuppaki’ all my old friends are asking me why I am not shooting for them,” Sivan told an interviewer.
