The shooting of 'Pokiri" a remake of the Telugu film of the same name, starring Vijay and Asin began on July 6 in Chennai. Prabhu Deva directs the Tamil version.

The inaugural function took place at AVM Studios after pooja was performed at the newly built Vinayaka temple at the studio premises at 8 a.m. A large number of film personalities, including directors and producers, attended the function.

The first shot was Vijay and Asin going in a lift.

Talking to reporters later, Vijay said 'Pokiri" in Tamil is not an exact copy of the Telugu version, but certain changes as required in Tamil Nadu have been made. Only some good portions have been taken from the Telugu "Pokiri". Song sequences are also different from the Telugu film.

Vijay said he plays a prank character as his fan would like. Songs would also be to the liking of the Tamil audience. There are "punchy" dialogues too. Vijay plays only one role; it's not 'double action', he added.

Stunt scenes are also different and "Pepsi" Vijayan is the stunt master. Before the start of the shooting, Vijay had visited Andhra Pradesh and seen "Bangaram" and "Pokiri". As the story of "Pokiri"impressed him, he decided to make the film in Tamil.

Vijay ruled out the possibility of his ever acting in either Telugu or Hindi films. 'I am happy being a Tamil actor with my Tamil fans." he said.
