Can 'Stalin' repeat the Chiranjeevi magic?

Sep 13, 2006 Kishore

A Cheeranjeevi movie release is nothing short of a festival in Andhra Pradesh. With crores of money involved and audio release done in a grand manner, the latest Cheeru flick, "Stalin" is creating unprecedented interest among the public. Wish there were some formula with which you could predict the outcome of a movie in the making.

When the ingredients used are of the finest quality can the dish prepared be less than the best? Well, it depends on the cook. If the cook as well as the ingredients is good then the dish is bound to be good.

But the same cannot be said of movies. You can have all the great cast and crew, yet the movie may swing either way. That's what makes the release of "Stalin" so exciting. The mega star of telugu movie industry, Chiranjeevi; reigning queen of Tamil and Telugu cinema, Trisha; director of the blockbuster 'Ghazni', A. Murugadoss; the best music director Mani Sharma; along with the crores of money invested, can these ensure that the viewers will come out of the theatres smiling away with the feeling of having watched a good movie? Unpredictable.

Two of Cheeranjeevi's last movies "Jai Cheeranjiva" and "Andarivadu" have not gone down with the audiences remarkably well. But two other movies, "Indra" and "Tagore", have been super hits. So it remains to be seen which way "Stalin" goes. Spurred by padmabhusan and stepping into the 53rd year, the mega star must have worked hard for the movie. But the point is all the hard work of the cast and crew should exceed the expectation of the viewers and that's no easy job.

The audio of "Stalin" didn't receive any great reviews. So "Stalin" starts with a handicap. That is not a problem since "Tagore" presented a similar scenario but went on to become a super hit and Jai Cheeranjeeva had good songs yet didn't do well. Trisha is a lucky heroine and most of her movies are successful at the box office. Murugadoss is a savvy narrator. Cheeranjeevi is a master actor who can give all the nine expressions that are included in 'Nava Rasa'. Yet...doubt lingers. Let's hope that it turns out to be another blockbuster like "Indra".

Cheeranjeevi plays the role of a major general, a soldier bent on serving his country to rid some of the social evils. That's a potent factor, which will go down well with the audience.

We know Cheeranjeevi can still deliver a hit even at 60, but questions like what kind of on-screen-chemistry exists between the lead pair, how the director has spun the yarn, was the director able to hold his own and are the characters well carved out, to make "Stalin" a hit remains to be seen. That can happen only on the 20th. Till that time everybody is waiting with a lot of anticipation and excitement.
