Kochi: Rajesh Pillai (41), one of Malayalam's promising new-age filmmakers, passed away at 11.40 am Saturday at PVS hospital in Kochi.

Hospital authorities confirmed the death of the director whose latest film 'Vetta' was released only Friday across the state. Pillai was born in Haripad and is survived by wife Mekha Rajesh, and his father.

Pillai was suffering from non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis and was getting ready for a liver transplant when death claimed him. He was admitted to hospital on Friday but his condition turned serious by night.

Pillai is best known for the trend setting 'Traffic' which started a series of new age filmmakers making path breaking movies in Malayalam. Traffic was a huge box office success as well as well received by the critics. The movie has been successfully remade to Tamil in the same name.
