Title trouble for Mersal

Sep 23, 2017 JB

Vijay starrer Mersal whose teaser is scaling great heights in terms of likes and shares, has gotten itself into a fresh trouble. Yesterday (22nd September) the Madras high court had issued an order to producers Thenandal Studios Limited against using the word “Mersal”.

This is in response to a petition filed by A. Rajendran of Film Factory of Villivakkam, Chennai who claimed that he had registered a story titled as Mersalaiten with the Tamil Nadu Film Writers’ Association. When he came to know that the title had already been registered in the name of Green Apple Pictures, he approached them and obtained a no objection certificate to transfer the title in his name and thus the title ‘Mersalaiten’ and `Naan Mersalaiten’ had been registered in his name. The title was also registered with the Tamil Nadu, Tamil Film Producers Council in 2014, which was confirmed by the Council by its letter dated May 19, 2015. And he commenced the production of his film Mersalaiten’ in August 2016.

Now he is shocked to note that there has been another film titled `Mersal’ and has lodged complaints with the Councils and as there was no proper response, he filed the present petition.

When the case came up for hearing yesterday, Justice Anitha Sumanth, granted an interim stay and posted the matter after Dussara holidays for further hearing. Till such period, the title Mersal cannot be used by the current film unit. Click the Movie button below for more info:
