Pete's Dragon review

Pete's Dragon

English · 2016

This is one remake that is so cute when it's cute that your heart melts. And even though it takes time to take off, the story remains as endearing as ever. You fall in love with the idea of magical creatures and come away knowing that this movie, though made with stock characters who do predictable things, is really a wonderful remake.

Ben-Hur review

Ben-Hur

English · 2016

This movie tears apart aesthetics and bludgeons on a beloved classic as if nothing matters. The screen is filled with so much violence that you are reduced to grimacing all through its 2 hours and 4 minutes running time. If you are really interested in a medieval epic, watch the original.

Nine Lives review

Nine Lives

English · 2016

Kevin Spacey plays Frank Underwood from House of Cards suffering from some sort of poison ivy because he's irascible, rude and annoying and you want to kick him real hard, when he turns into Mr. Fuzzypants, the cat. Don't ask. He's then a meowing Underwood suffering from poison ivy. If it is supposed to be humorous, but there's not even a chuckle you can muster.

Mohenjo Daro review

Mohenjo Daro

Hindi · 2016

Ashutosh Gowarikar has a penchant for long drawn out epic tales. This time he goes to 2016 BC in order to tell a tale that is a bhelpuri or avial or stew or all of the above of everything from Star Wars to Gladiator to Moses to Noah to Hercules and everything in between. It starts out to be an interesting journey, but rapidly rolls towards a disaster (literally and figuratively) to a bedraggled end.

Hindi · 2016

A fictionalised version of the famous (or the infamous?) Nanavati case where a Naval officer shot his wife's lover should have been a brilliant courtroom drama, but ends up being ridiculous, with the director opting for cheap laughs. Akshay Kumar looks handsome in the uniform, but the mooch... the mooch...

Suicide Squad review

Suicide Squad

English · 2016

It is a superhero movie that pretends to be badass. And no matter how much the filmmakers try to hoodwink the audience into believing the characters are so bad they're good, the audience is smarter. Should Margot Robbie's delectable derriere distract you from that fact, then you'll enjoy it in bits and parts.

Jason Bourne review

Jason Bourne

English · 2016

There's Bourne, international travel, guns, girls, betrayals, chases, hacking into computers, more international travels, and walking. Lots and lots of walking. Down roads, behind suspects, behind informers, crossing roads, down many flights of stairs and up. Everything but a story that you cannot guess from a mile away. You just wish you weren't such a fan of the series.

Budhia Singh - Born To Run

Hindi · 2016

When a coach trains a five year old against all logic, is it for self publicity or has he really saved the boy from abject poverty and slavery? Does the government have any right over a young sportsperson's need to run or did they do a right thing? This movie tackles all this and more by telling us the story of a five year old marathon runner Budhia Singh and his devoted coach Birinchi Das. Will shake you up.

The Legend of Michael Mishra review

The Legend of Michael Mishra

Hindi · 2016

A chap called FP (Full Pant) tells us the love story of Michael Mishra, a gangster who fell in love and changed his ways. It's so badly written, there is one guffaw in the whole movie (unintentional), lazily acted, the regional accents are horrible (sometimes absent) and you have seen better choreography and lyrics at the neighborhood bollywood dances classes.

Love Ke Funday review

Love Ke Funday

Hindi · 2016

If you had no hope for this generation of high-heel wearing clone women (not unlike stepford wives) and muscle-bound brainless young sex-starved men, then you would be right. If this is where the movies are taking us, then it might be like... Er... Like to Nowhere, ya!

The BFG review

The BFG

English · 2016

Steven Spielberg sort of fumbles with Roald Dahl classic and yet mark Rylance's delighful, sensitive, gentle performance turns this movie into a very sweet little film for the family. The fantasy scenes do remind us of how amazing the director can be. But with Hollywood's penchant of taking away all the dark elements the story remains in the easy to forget zone. This is not ET The Extra Terrestrial.

Dishoom review

Dishoom

Hindi · 2016

If you said Hindi comedy, it meant ghastly sex comedies or completely stupid comedies which are loud and labled 'leave your brains behind'. Thankfully Dishoom is nothing like either. It's pure fun. Silly, but fun. You'll laugh at the funny lines, and you'll like where the story is going. And everyone in the cast looks like they had a great time at the movies.
