Sully review

Sully

English · 2016

Americans have long questioned their heroes, so much so that people ought to ask why they should anything for others, ever. Clint Eastwood takes a miracle and turns it upside down by using the best cinematic techniques in order to make us wonder if the amazing landing of a gigantic Airbus on the frozen Hudson river was fantastic flying or an unnecessary risk. Tom Hanks is simply superb as the man who made this miracle possible.

Baar Baar Dekho review

Baar Baar Dekho

Hindi · 2016

A grouchy young man seems to be living a sort of groundhog day when everyone around him is happy celebrating his wedding to his childhood sweetheart. We know he has to re-live the day that changed his fate but we don't know why. And despite Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra's 'hotness' which drew the audiences in, the story leaves you cold.

Freaky Ali

Hindi · 2016

It's a sports underdog movie where Nawazuddin Siddiqui gets to play a man from the wrong side of the tracks to win at a game meant for the idle rich. The story starts out to be great fun, but it becomes so repetitive in the middle that even the jokes are a drag and then dragged down by Bollywoodisation of the story: unsportsmanlike behavior, intervention by the gods, maa ka aashirvaad and big gangster with bigger heart...

Yea Toh Two Much Ho Gayaa

Hindi · 2016

Identical twins, weepy mother, rude brother, heroine who loves hero from when she was a child, comic relief gangster, gangster who indulges brother... Every character that you see in this film is a ridiculous homage to Manmohan Desai. The director Anwar Khan has allegedly worked with the maestro for 17 years.

Island City review

Island City

Hindi · 2016

Three stories, tenuously tied in a presentation that is so amateurish, you wonder why NFDC would back this film school type story-telling. Thankfully one story stands alone and puts a smile on your face. This should have been released on YouTube.

Don't Breathe review

Don't Breathe

English · 2016

What looks like an ordinary break-in for the purpose of robbery goes horribly wrong when the three young thieves discover that the owner of the house is actually in the house. It is shot beautifully (in a best possible version of the word 'claustrophobic') and yet the story turns into some episode of Law & Order Special Victims Unit or like 10 Cloverfield Lane... Been there, seen that.

Jackie Chan still has it! He can kick and punch his way out of the oddest of scenes, save the girl and get the bad guy too. In this movie he has to drag the obnoxious Johnny Knoxville who has proof against the bad guy from Russia all the way across picturesque China to Hong Kong. But the novelty wears off really fast and you wish Johnny Knoxville all kinds of hell.

Mechanic Resurrection review

Mechanic Resurrection

English · 2016

Jason Statham can fix anything and make it look like an accident. Now he has to take on a job to create three accidents to save his girl. That's why the mafia calls him the 'mechanic'. The locales are wonderful, the panoramic shots beautiful but the romance is unbelievable and the action, predictable.

A Flying Jatt review

A Flying Jatt

Hindi · 2016

A young lad becomes a superhero and defeats a big baddie and not only wins hearts but also the girl. Good plot, right? But it has been so needlessly Bollywoodised with a song and dance and everything seems to be happening so slowly you lose patience with it, despite some genuinely funny moments.

Happy Bhag Jayegi review

Happy Bhag Jayegi

Hindi · 2016

An India-Pakistan encounter that does not involve terrorists or silly politicians or bad-mouthing 'them'? Never thought it was possible. But writer-director Mudassar Aziz manages that and offers us a funny story on a runaway bride, harried cops, silly cops, ambitious fathers, arranged marriages, and so much more... Mostly predictable, but delightful nonetheless.

Un-Indian review

Un-Indian

Hindi · 2016

You'll love this film if you have never heard NRI tales, never had relatives who live abroad complain about 'Indians', never visited a foreign country, stayed with relatives who behave at once Indian and at once 'foreign'. The story is as old as the hills, but Brett Lee (the cricketer!) really gives his all to the role and we believe him. More than all the established actors in the film.
