'Theeram' is a shoddily made romantic drama and it fails to score on promising premises.

As 'mute romance' takes the center stage in "Theeram," the template of this love story becomes predictable at the outset for most of us. Due to this trite theme, the conflict in the tale imparts only feeble emotions. So as a viewer, one would be panting for more intensity in the narration.

In the backdrop of picturesque Alappuzha, Ali (Pranav Ratheesh) develops a crush on Suhra (Maria John) at first sight. Since the protagonist is an extremely introvert youth, he is unable to disclose his love for Suhra, who works with him in a pastry making unit. Besides, Ali's love for Suhra never blooms beyond the infatuation stage. When another youth (Askar Ali) proposes her for marriage, Ali stands like a mute witness.

Suhra seems to be impassive throughout, and it's her eyes do the talking in most scenes. Still, it's not a performance-oriented character for Maria John. Considering the character's religious and family backgrounds, this drawback could be ignored. The reticent Ali, who rides auto rickshaw at night, is safe to an extent in the hands of Pranav Ratheesh but in totality his performance is not up to snuff. He is always helpless even in his own love affair.

The film appears to be inert and unconvincing owing to the fissures in the screenplay by Prinish Prabhakaran. Despite showing glimpses of potential in some areas of the film, first-time director Saheed Arafath can't generate the enthusiasm demanded by a romantic tale. But he could adequately portray the lives of some people and their destiny.

"Theeram" is a shoddily made romantic drama and it fails to score on promising premises.
