Kutty Naduvi starts his film 'Note Out' with an anticipatory bail that it is his first film, and that viewers should take kindly to it. Quite a wise move indeed, since there are bound to be quite a few spectators to this chaotic affair who might have ended up banging their heads in dismay.

Pavitran (Nishan) and his four friends lead a shiftless life, much to the annoyance of their parents. Pavi dreams of becoming a film director some day, while the rest of them play truant at whatever jobs they already have. During one of their many escapades, Pavi climbs up a tree and finds Maya (Mithra Kurien) perched on top. As fate would have it, she latches on to his back and refuses to let go.

The script for most of its part hangs on for its dear life to the antics of the fivesome that on the odd occasion seem funny, but for the most part of which leave us squirming in our seats. Like there is the one when they catapult themselves into a women's hostel in hitherto unseen ways.

The entry of the villain (Joseph George) in a double role makes matters worse, and throws the rest of the film into total disarray. Mistaken identities and mismanaged affairs could be fun, but only if they make sense. Here though, the ultimate impact that it has on the viewer is quite detrimental.

Besides the main villain, there are three lesser baddies called Mr. Black, White and Red who seem to have chicken feed up there instead of brains and the only reason they are there is because they want you to laugh at them. They soon get busy doing all sorts of outlandish things and before long you wish you had stayed home.

Often you end up disappointed with the performances as well. Nishan who had made such an impressive debut with 'Rithu' a couple of years back is reduced to playing a man with no sense of direction. Nothing wrong with the role as such, if the actor could do justice to the character. Sadly, he sticks out like a sore thumb in this bunch of five friends, and often make us wish he was somewhere more comfortable; like in the cosy confines of an air conditioned flat instead of where he finds himself in 'Note Out'.

The rest of the actors like Anoop Chandran and Bijukuttan are their usual selves, and we do know how hazardous that could be if they are let loose without a director around. That's what happens here as well. And there is Suraj Venjarammoodu as well, with his customary buffoonery in tact. Sumesh and Shiya along with Mithra Kurien deliver adequate performances.

Which reminds me, I have absolutely no idea why they have named the film 'Note Out'. It isn't even money-obsessed like several other films, and hence the title would always remain a mystery. If at all it does something, it is only to make the confusion multifold.
