Sargunam makes his debut with Kalavani, a story set in a rural milieu.

Arikku (Vimal of Pasanga fame) is the village ruffian who is always up to mischief with his group of friends. His father (Ilavarasu) who works in Dubai believes that his son is doing a computer course. But Arikku has not even managed to clear his plus two. Irresponsible and wayward, he bullies his mother (Saranya) into giving him money; otherwise he threatens to break the television set. A chance encounter with Mageshwari (Oviya), a school student from another village develops into love between the two. Her elder brother is a tough and much feared man. The inhabitants of the two villages are often at loggerheads with each other. This spills over to the children's cricket match too.

As the story unfolds, you find nothing new in the plot. It is the usual duets and banter between the young couple. 'Ganja Karuppu,' brings in comedy with his trademark dialogue delivery. There is bloodshed and violence too, when Magesh's brother discovers about Arikku's affair with his sister.

Kalavani is a run of the mill story. However what lingers after the film ends are the beautiful visuals. Vimal as Arikku shows promise. Oviya is a fresh face and suits the school going girl on a cycle. Saranya is wasted talent, is she only going to play the grieving mother all the time? S.S. Kumaran of 'Poo,' has composed the music.
