'Gauramma' reigns, unchallenged

Bangalore, July 22 (IANS) The new films released last fortnight have failed to deliver and old hits continue to occupy the top slots.

The top five Kannada films are:

1. "Gauramma": The film will be completing 50 days in almost all the theatres. The collections continue to show a steady trend despite stiff competition from other star-studded films like "Shastri" and "Masala" released later.

2. "Akash": Puneet Raj Kumar's film could be termed a huge hit going by the fact that it will soon complete 100 days in many major centres. It is still doing well in Bangalore and Mysore. Puneet and Ramya have proved to be a successful combination.

3. "Shastri": Popular action hero Darshan ensured top collections for the film in the initial weeks. The collections, however, have gone down recently.

4. "Aaptha Mithra": In another month, the film will complete one year of running. But the collections are not encouraging for the producers. The distributors and producers are engaged in innovative ways to lure the audience. For the past two weeks Vishnu fans have been organising weekend celebrations in the theatres.

5. "Masala": The huge publicity drive by the producers has helped the film with all its double-meaning dialogues and focus on sex attracting considerable audiences. The film, made on a reasonable budget of around Rs.6.5 million, is all set to recover its costs.
