All about a name!

Jun 5, 2007 NR

What's in a name? That's what you obviously tend to ask when you hear about young Renju hailing from Ernakulam. But it should be remembered that in filmdom names do matter. Why else should Yusuf Khan become Dileep Kumar? Why else should Abhas Kumar Ganguli become Kishore Kumar? Why else should Shivaji Rao become Rajnikanth? Why else should Chirayinkeezh Abdul Khader become Prem Nazeer? Why else should Mohammed Kutty become Mammootty? Why else should Dhanya become Navya and Girlie become Gopika and so on? The list will go on and on.

Renju, who made his debut as a hero with his very first film Thudakkam, decided to launch himself with a new screen name. And thus the hero of the film was not Renju, but Renju rechristened as Shivaaj. Thudakkam (meaning 'the beginning') turned out a disaster at the box office and seemed to be the road's end for Shivaaj. He then tried his hand at a television serial playing the hero in Koodevide and managed to stay afloat. (He also played a character in the popular television series Vikramadityan).

This young enterprising actor decided to fight it out and re-invent himself, of course with a brand new name. And thus Renju turned Shivaaj has now renamed himself Niranjan and is all set to re-launch himself in cinema with Naadiya Kollappetta Rathre, the thriller directed by hit-maker K. Madhu. And this time he is not the hero, but one among the hero's aides. The hero is Suresh Gopi. K. Madhu is a director who has helped build the careers of many in the past many years and this could perhaps be Niranjan's lucky break.
