'Chandramukhi' is heading towards becoming an all time hit
May 15, 2005 May 15Chennai(May 15): "Chandramukhi" has made its way to the top of the box office, registering Rs 1.25 crore in its 25 days of theatrical show in Chennai city alone.
Chandramukhi is turning out to be a box-office blockbuster, and is all set to become a highest grosser in the history of Tamil film industry. According to trade analysts Chandramukhi is expected to surpass Padaiappa, the highest grosser till date, which registered Rs 1.45 crore during the same period. Trade insiders say "Chandramukhi will be even a bigger hit than Padaiappa and Badsha in terms of popularity and may gross box office receipts of Rs 3 crore in Chennai circle, in the longer run".
Summer season and the film's rising popularity among the family film goers is thought to contribute to the record admissions in all the theaters where the move is released. The film as a wholesome family entertainer, is most popular among the family audiences, and is also drawing repeat audience which is at its highest in 8 years.
Even in other areas, the film has generated good financial performance. Kovai territory- constituting Erode, Tirupur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Pollachi- collectively made Rs 2.36 crore and is expected to make 3 crore in the long run.
In NSC area- comprising North Arcot, South Arcot and Chengalpettu- the film is likely to gross Rs 8 Crore! Down south, in Tirunelveli- Kanyakumari area, the collections are expected to be Rs 1.50 Crore, twice of what Padayappa did!
Going by the current trend of filmgoers' choice, Chandramukhi will do business worth Rs 22.5 Crore from theatrical rights in Tamil Nadu.
Assuming that the family audience continues to support the film and the collections settles around 50 % of what it is today, and then the move is expected to make Rs 25 crore in Tamil Nadu.
In Karnataka, Chandramukhi is anticipated to make Rs 3 Crore despite it being the remake of Aapthamithra. In Kerala, the film is likely to make Rs 1.50 Crore. In Andhra Pradesh, the distributors share for the Telugu dubbed version of the film is expected to make around Rs 8 Crore! The film's performance in North Indian belts like Mumbai, Pune, Belgaum, Ahmedabad, Ranchi and Delhi are no exception. Huge crowds thronging the multiplexes are expected to contribute Rs 25 Crore, a record collection for a Tamil film in the Northern region.
In the overseas market, Chandramukhi is drawing large crowds. Especially, in countries such as Japan, Malaysia, UAE, London and the US, the film is touted to become the first Tamil movie to do business over $ 2 Million (Rs 8 Crore). According to overseas distributors, the film is expected to generate Rs. 10 to Rs. 11 Crore including DVD and local TV rights.
Going by the statistics, overall business potential for Chandramukhi will be more than Rs 60 Crore worldwide.
With the success of Chandramukhi, Tamil superstar Rajnikanth has become the highest paid star in India, as he is all set to get Rs 15 crore for this film.
