May 27, 2008 PVS

Chief Minister Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, soon after returning home last week after hospitalisation for a couple of days, took a short break from his busy official schedule and devoted time to his pet film project "Uliyin Osai" which is ready for release.

He was present at the Kalaignar Television Studios when the final touches were being given to the film, which is an adaptation of the famous novel "Sarapallam Samundi" written by him some 30 years ago. He has provided the script also.

Directed by Ilavenil and produced by S.P. Murugesan, the film features Vineeth as a sculptor in the lead with Akshaya and Keerthi Chawla playing the heroines.

The film has a seven-minute foreword by Mr. Karunanidhi, who has taken personal interest in the project and has been overseeing its progress.

The foreword was partly shot at the Chief Minister's Gopalapuram residence and the Kalaignar TV office which is located on the premises of the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam.

Before delivering the foreword, Mr. Karunanidhi saw the rushes at AVM studies. Ilavenil said the Chief Minister was so moved by the climax that he could not hold back his tears. "He became very emotional after seeing the climax and he wept for a few minutes."

There are six songs set to the music of 'Isai Gnani' Ilayaraja. As part of the promotional campaign, producer Murugesan will distribute two lakh copies of the lyrics of the songs in book form after the audio release. The seven-minute foreword by the Kalaignar also will be printed as a booklet and distributed.

It is claimed that though the film has no big star cast, it has done good business even in its re-recording stages. Reports are doing the rounds that the film has been bought by a close aide of a State Minister.
