Gnanpeeth award winner Girish Karnad, who rarely appears in South Indian films, plays a powerful role in Siva's new directorial venture "Dhanam" which is under production.

He says he has agreed to act in this off-beat film after Siva narrated the script which impressed him very much.

Karnad plays the role of Shastri. Despite being the head of an orthodox Brahmin family, Shastri accepts Dhanam (Sangeetha) from the 'Dasi' community as his daughter-in-law. The troubles and tribulations he faces after he brings Dhanam into his family form the crux of the story.

Praising Sangeetha, Karnad has been quoted as saying, "She is unique and has her own strengths. I do not want to compare her with anybody. I had never seen an actress as spontaneous as her."

Acclaimed theatre personality, renowned director and multifaceted actor Girish Karnad has made a significant contribution to developing art form.

Sangeetha should consider Karnad's praise as an honour.

According to sources, an actress should be really bold to accept a role like the one offered to her in "Dhanam". She had tough time acting in certain scenes. These scenes were filmed after barricading the shooting spot with the screens. As she clearly understood the nuances of her sensitive role and import of the script, she could overcome her 'embarrassment" and help finish the shooting on schedule.

Besides Karnad and Sangeetha, the cast includes Prem, Kota Srinivasa Rao and Aashish Vidyarthi.

Music for the movie has been scored by Ilayaraja and the audio is claimed is to a hit.
